Mobi Revelation (The Protectors, Book 7) with FREE EASY Reading!

I read this book a while back, and had forgotten most of it -- so I went back to reread so I could post a review. I was nonplussed to realize that, in terms of layout, themes, and story beats, it's almost identical to my favorite book in the series, Retribution. The main characters meet by one of them intruding and menacing the other at the start? Check. One of the leads is trying to escape an abusive situation? Check. There's a child that one of them feels responsible for and is trying to protect? Check. The other lead starts to feel attraction, and it shakes him because he's only ever been STRAIGHT before? Check, check, check. Even more importantly, this book does much the same thing as said other book -- uses the plot more as a device to keep the characters together, and given them reason to interact, and thus, their relationship to grow. There's also a lot of down-time with the characters just going over what their pasts were, how they got here in the first place, and plenty of time spent with Ronan, Seth, and their children that establish the characteristics of our two leads and that they bond over.So... what's so different that it left so little an impression? Is it the suspense? That should make it more outstanding -- because there is a genuine air of tension and fear hovering over the majority of the book, as Ethan and Cain don't know if they're even safe from Ethan's ex, or if they will catch him. It's almost Hitchcockian, how tense it is. Maybe it's because the story of Ethan's past comes fairly early in the book -- compared to how, normally, the characters will withhold information for as long as possible (because, realistically, most people don't want to relive their trauma and want to just forget about it) -- except it's drawn out by Ronan, who's acting in the capacity as a man who wants to help get Ethan away from an abuser, and that's pretty well done, too. Maybe it's just how harsh Cain's past is -- even for the Protectors, it's a MASSIVE shock to the system, to read his account of his past. Even that, though is still well drawn out and shown. It's also impressive for how it portrays the different ways that abusers hurt their victims, but also keeping to the core similarities that make it distinctly abusive -- not just the physical aspect, but also the emotional and psychological effects, as well as terms of financial and property abuse. Sloane Kennedy has done her homework for this book.Maybe the big sticking point is the resolution of their main problem. There's a confrontation with Cain's past, and it feels a little rushed -- but that's also a little standard for this series, and it's never been a big problem for me. By contrast, their resolution with Ethan's abusive ex is borne, not of the Protectors all coming together, using their various skills and teamwork, and strategy and bringing down an abuser in a satisfying blow, but instead by the newest member of the team -- one Vincent St. James -- delivering something of a Deus Ex Machina. It does a good job making me wonder who he is and being invested for his story (which would need to wait, until Book 9) and building mystery for HIS character, except that felt out of place when it was Ethan and Cain's story. Also, the fact that the prologue had a very casual mentioning of Cain's intentions -- with the previous handful of broom-jumpings in the Protectors family, it'd taken at least a few more books before we hear about it. The speed of this one went a little fast, even for the Protectors.But, as always, the characters are unique and fleshed out -- it was especially refreshing to see the fact that Ethan had been adopted and any numerous other problems in his childhood be realistically related to how his abuser was able to get to him, in the past, which I feel like a lot of fiction tends to ignore when writing this kind of drama -- and it was a nice motif to see the compare and contrast between his and Cain's childhood, again, as showing that abuse might not always look the same, but it comes from the same place. It also has one line that stuck with me. As Cain is struggling to wonder if his and Ethan's relationship could work, Ronan offers one simple piece of advice: "Things change...people change." If that isn't just one of the core pillars of the Protectors series, though. Ronan even points out how he's changed, and for a reader who's been following since book one, it shows -- how love, support, and family can ultimately help heal trauma that, going into the books, all these men had previously thought they'd NEVER recover from. Even if you might be getting tired of these books, just that line alone should remind you to hang in there -- because ultimately, these books are a message to anyone, anywhere, to keep having hope. And that's good enough for me.
